SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association) — Bahrain’s public prosecutor says authorities have charged 15 policemen with mistreating medics during last year’s crackdown on opposition protesters. The charges on Tuesday follow an investigation into police abuses that was recommended last year by an independent commission that studied the Shiite majority’s uprising against the Sunni monarchy.
The complaints filed by doctors and nurses from Salmaniya Medical Complex are among the most delicate for Bahrain’s leadership as it confronts the grievances of the kingdom’s Shiites. The state-run Salmaniya complex was thrust into the limelight when injured people from the uprising were brought there for treatment. Authorities say the doctors sided with protesters and tried to topple the country’s ruling system. The doctors said they were only doing their jobs. In June, an appeals court upheld convictions of nine doctors charged with crimes related to the revolt; they were sentenced to between one month to five years in prison.
