SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association) — United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has once again expressed his deep concerns about the ongoing violence in Syria.
“We are deeply concerned… This is an unacceptable situation,” Ban told reporters on Monday.
He added that the armed opposition groups have also “stepped up their attacks” and “the situation is getting worse and worse.”
“Each day, as the violence spirals, more Syrians are killed, injured, tortured or forced to flee their homes or their country,” he stated.
The UN chief also denounced an attack on a convoy carrying UN observer mission chief, General Babacar Gaye in Syria.
“More than a dozen of armored vehicles have been attacked and destroyed completely. It is quite fortunate that nobody got injured by these attacks,” Ban said.
General Gaye arrived in Damascus last week to replace the outgoing head of the United Nations Supervision Mission in Syria, General Robert Mood.
Unlike the Syrian government, the armed groups have not accepted the six-point peace plan, proposed by UN-Arab League envoy to Syria Kofi Annan in April.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Damascus says outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorists are the driving factor behind the unrest and deadly violence while the opposition accuses the security forces of being behind the killings.
Western states have been calling for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down. However, Russia and China are strongly opposed to the Western drive to oust Assad.
The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country.—www.shafaqna.com/english
