SHAFAQNA (Shia News Association)“When the people get their rights to make a determination, the regime that would like to be ruled, definitely that regime will put in front of the Bahraini people interests in place of the governing interests of the US,” said Abbas Al-Omran from the Bahrain Center for Human Rights, in an exclusive interview with Press TV on Monday.

The US and British authorities turn a blind eye to the massive violation of human rights and the excessive force being used by Bahraini troops against protesters to quell the demonstrations, al-Omran added.

“They know very well that there are continuous - on a daily basis - protests, coming down to the streets and calling for their rights during the last 16 months. They know there is wide torture practice happening daily inside the prisons and even on the streets. But they keep hiding on that one,” he noted.

The Bahraini activist stressed that the Al Khalifa regime continues killing and torturing its opponents, despite a report by the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI) which blamed the regime for the violation of human rights.

“The BICI committee that’s been formed and headed by Cherif Bassiouni came out with a lot of facts especially about the torture inside the jails, killing more people and the checkpoints which have been spread wide everywhere,” al-Omran went on to say.

“Nothing has been changed and no reforms have been made after that BICI report came out and made that recommendation. The situation in Bahrain came as it is,” he concluded.

The Persian Gulf island nation has experienced almost daily demonstrations since mid-February 2011, demanding political reforms and a constitutional monarchy.

The popular demand, however, gradually changed into an outright call for the ouster of the ruling Al Khalifa family following brutal crackdown on popular protests.

Scores of people have also been killed and many others have been injured in the Saudi-backed crackdown on peaceful protesters in Bahrain.
